| The house is built on the original site of Wilmount Castle which dominated the skyline on the east side of Cobh. The castle was a neo-gothic extravaganza, built by the Seymore Family in the mid-19th century. It featured two tall towers at each end of the building surmounted by 4 lions, reputedly cast by Landseer, and with an enormous eagle between them. On the western tower, Captain Seymour installed one of the earliest telephones in Ireland, connecting the castle with his shipping offices on Lynch’s Quay.
